Originally created in 1923 as an advertisement for new housing in the Santa Monica Mountains, the sign became a symbol for American cinema during the Golden Age. The word “land” was taken off from the sign in 1949, and in the 1970s, the sign was renovated and restored from its deteriorated state (thanks Alice Cooper!).
